Cast a Line; Snag a Prize and Raise Funds for the Fish Stocker Challenge
Caloundra MP Mark McArdle is urging keen fishers to throw out a line and raise much needed funding for future fish stocking at Ewen Maddock Dam by competing in the inaugural Fish Stockers Challenge on February 23.
The competition is a “catch, photograph and release” event aimed at encouraging further participation in the sport of fishing as well as raising funds.
Mr McArdle is encouraging anyone interested in fishing to grab family and friends and head to the dam.
‘’In addition to the main competition a number of other activities will be able to be enjoyed by all,’’ Mr McArdle said.
‘’There will be informative displays regarding fishing and fish stocking, prize raffles, sales of fishing equipment and tackle, BBQ and drinks, and activities for kids.’’
Mr McArdle said there is a serious side to the day.
‘’The day is inspired by the long and tireless efforts of the Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc,’’ Mr McArdle said.
Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc Secretary Steve Evans said since the construction of Ewen Maddock Dam in 1973 it has suffered from depleted fish stocks.
‘’In 2010 a group of concerned anglers formed a group focused on restocking this beautiful waterway in partnership with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council, SEQ Water and the Queensland Government Department of Fisheries,’’ Mr Evans said.
‘’The first major stocking activity occurred in February 2011 with the release of 29,000 fingerlings.
‘’Further fingerling releases have occurred each year since.
‘’These fingerlings have grown at a very healthy rate and anglers in the Dam are now consistently catching trophy sized fish.
‘’And that’s where the idea for the competition came in, it’s the perfect way to promote fish stocking and the sport.’’
