Following chats with some of the Muso Club members I will offer a basic PA operation course over 3 sessions at the Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre on Saturday mornings – Feb 16, Mar 2 and Mar 16 from 10am – 1pm. The cost will be $20 per person per session.
For this short PA course we will aim to cover a lot of *material, but it will be such that if you miss a session you won’t feel left behind, and there will be good handouts. I will encourage you to do a bit of reading and to come armed with questions, but it will be mainly “hands on” and it will be conducted at the level of the participants. I want to emphasise that as it is no use me putting this on if people find it too technical. It will be aimed at those who come along to the Musos Club, and to those who play and listen to music, and want to get some idea about how the sound is all pulled together. Following the PA operation course, people who take part will have the opportunity to apply their experience at the Musos Club.
Please note: Although it isn’t essential, if you’d like to come do get in touch with me so I know how many hand outs (and biscuits) to bring along! And of course it is open to anyone, not just Muso Club members, so if you know of anyone who might want to take part, please pass this info onto them.
*We can’t cover everything in 3 sessions, but we will get a good taste in that time. And if the interest is there we can develop and extend the sessions at some later date.
Basic sound engineer skills include operating the mixing desk, mono and stereo PA systems, speaker capability and placement, role of foldback/stage monitors and running 1 and 2 monitor mixes, feedback control – “ringing out the monitors”, used of the multicore, EQ, compression, limiting and the use of FX. We will also consider microphone placement and technique, the difference between dynamic and condensor microphones – providing PA for singers, choirs, instrumentalists etc. A PA set up for outside as against inside use will be looked at, along with how to perform a sound check – its objectives and outcomes. We will get to appreciate the difference between different makes of equipment and the sort of gear that is on the market eg active and passive speakers will be considered along with matching amplifiers with speakers and appreciating the role that impedance and speaker sensitivity plays and lots more.
