The key is willingness; willingness keeps the door open just enough, till you have the faith to walk through it. You will hear a lot of people talking about having the faith, and “trust yourself”, “believe in yourself and you can accomplish anything”, “just visualise yourself doing it”, you would of heard many clichés like this. However, as we suffer setbacks, or have doubt due to circumstances out of our control we can’t quite get to that absolute faith in some idea.
There is story, not sure if it is true, about Christopher Columbus, who as we all know discovered America. It is reported that he was certain that the world was round, not flat. He was reported to be unequivocally convinced that he could get west, by heading east, remember back then they were scared of sailing off the edge of the earth. The world was flat after all.
So he started off sailing, but deep down he wasn’t so sure about the round world idea. Apparently he put a man at the front of the boat, and said, “look buddy, I am sure the world is round, we can get west by heading east, but I want you to stay up the front, and if you see anything that looks like the end of world, yell out, and yell out loud”. He was willing to believe it was round, but was not sure, he didn’t have faith yet. However, he was willing to believe.
Willingness + Action= Faith.
So you start out with a small, run, walk, swim, ride, you outline your business plan, you enrol in your choice of study. You start with something, anything, small steps. I know someone who thought that they could do a marathon. They were not sure about it. Their training started about 6 months prior to the Gold Coast marathon. There first run was 3 km and it took 18.30 mins. That’s not slow, nor fast, but it was a start. His plan was to run 3.5-4km the week later, hardly, enough to be ready for a marathon, or having faith that he would complete the marathon. However, as he stayed willing to keep going, and believing he might get there, his times got quicker and his distance got longer. Two weeks prior to the marathon, WOW, faith had arrived. Willingness + Action = Faith.
So be willing to start whatever it is, keep the door slightly ajar so willingness can let action enter. Then take some action, if it is not what you want, you can always make another decision, and follow a new course of action. You can get east, by heading west, and if you need someone at the front to keep an eye out, join a group, I know of many which are free.
