Question: Where is the Best Meat in Beerwah and the Sunshine Coast?

June 30, 2015 by Glasshouse Country 40 Comments

A difficult question to ask publicly because we understand that not everyone enjoys meat and my respect to those who choose not to eat meat.

  • Where is the absolute best place to buy meat?
  • Where is the cheapest place to buy meat?
  • Where is the best quality beaf to be found?

This is the first of the Where is Questions:  we will be asking over the next few weeks. I am looking for truthful honest answers to this question.   I can already tell you that its not cheap at CostCo down at North Lakes thought  I can’t comment on the quality at Cost Co because it’s out of my price range. I have spoken with Cost Co about this but they say they don’t compete on price in the meat section.

Meet Lovers Guide to the Best Cuts of Beef

I know that there are some farms in the region who sell to the public and I am hoping to offer them some local support too.

What about Dog bones? Where is the best place for dog bones, ever since I have taken my dog to the Dorothea Hoffman at Glass House Holistic Veterinary Services who encouraged me to give our dogs more bones I have been on the lookout for good dog treats. Dog bones are surprisingly expensive.

Interesting.. Costco mince $7 a kg.. Prime mince.. Expensive.. No
$12 a kg for steak.. $8 kg for pork roast, $9 kg for pork belly. Right on the money.
I also love Beerwah meats for treats and gluten free ranges.

I host the Sunshine Coast Paleo/Primal/Real Food Meet-Up Group and we promote quality meat for the health of people eating it and the health of the planet. We keep a spreadsheet handy for our members which contains local butchers and farmers supplying grass-fed/finished and organic meat. We even host farm tours so members can meet the farmers and learn how quality meat is produced. If you’d like to collaborate let us know 🙂

Actually, Costco is cheaper than woolies and aldi! Mince for $6.99 pkg can’t be beaten and it is amazing meat. We wandered through the meat sections of Aldi, IGA and Woolies and were amazed at the price hike that seems to have happened in the last few months.

The mince at Costco is really cheap and a decent quality… But I have noticed that the price of a lot of the other meat isn’t that great – the chicken tends to be at least the same if not more expensive than Woolies/Coles.

Costco don’t have the same cuts as the majors, that’s why there is a price difference. I’m in love with the boneless beef ribs, their sausages are amazing and the pork is also wonderful.

I love the prices! I get the feeling that people aren’t checking the per kilo price, just the whole pack price as it is a lot bigger. Per kilo, Costco are competitive.

Unfortunately Meat City has been very disappointing in the last couple of months. When started shopping there regularly 12 months ago, the quantity, quality and price was spectacular. I stopped buying from them 2 months ago sadly….the chicken from the freezer section was disgusting…mince went from 6-8.99 kg to 19.99kg. If you wanted chops, they are same price if not more than woolies and Coles. I scored some chicken breast from Beerwah Woolies last week for $4.50kg. The size of each pieces were enormous and they tasted really good. I moving back to Beerwah this weekend so will be looking for good priced meat for budget family..

There are some very good meat suppliers locally and I will document these in full, one of the reasons I wrote this post is because food is so expensive in Australia, and there are a lot of people trying to make ends meet smile emoticon. Try and buy or source food outside of a supermarket chain, so it’s essentially the large chains which are monopolising expensive food prices, we all know their markup is terrific, – but we can still source meat from independent retailers and I would like Beerwah to show support to these independent meat retailers, while we still have them, and I hope we always will, however the independent butchers need to do their bit too and offer us affordable quality meat.

I had some overseas guests stay over this week and food in England is much the same price as it is in Australia, and Wine is much cheaper (and it’s Australian Wine which is cheaper). Ask any bottle shop around these parts, I alway give them an ear bashing and let them know when are ripping us off – they just shrug their shoulders.

The Bottle O’s in our region have long been taking locals for a ride, and it’s a shame because like butchers there are still many independent bottle shops around, and long may the last, but unfortunately our local shops think it OK to make as much profit as they can. Sure sometimes they have specials which match up with prices on the Coast but this is seldom the case.

I am working on a post called,’ What does it mean to shop local’, because I have mixed feelings about the shop local thing, I am not certain that we all understand why the difference between why it’s important to shop local and when better to shop elsewhere.

I am heading toward the idea that it’s better to shop independent, and also to shop Australian, Shop Local is certainly important.

If you have some thoughts to share please let me know.
