Celebrate and Enjoy Historic Surf Culture at the “Sons of Beaches 72” Exhibition at the Caloundra Regional Gallery from 5 December 2013 to 2 February 2014

Reminisce the early 1970s surfing culture at the art and film installation Sons of Beaches 72 on display at Sunshine Coast Council’s Caloundra Regional Gallery from 5 December 2013 to 2 February 2014.


Sons of Beaches 72 charts the development of the seminal pro-surfing movement that rose from the Gold Coast in the early 1970s, highlighting the short-board revolution in Australia.

Featured alongside the exhibition, Caloundra Regional Gallery will display works from the Sunshine Coast Corporate Art Collection that explore surfing culture on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.

All are welcome to attend the official opening on Friday 6 December at 6pm and book to attend the following range of public programs with a difference:

A Perfect Blend

Thursday 12 December, 10.30am

Join Queensland surfing legend and journalist Andrew McKinnon for an hour of humour and history to reminisce about the days of surfing culture on the Sunshine Coast.

A free event, bookings essential by 11 December 2013.

ArtsCool Holiday Workshops

  • Tuesday 17 December, 10.30am-noon (5 to 8 years)
  • Tuesday 17 December. 1.30-3pm (8 to 12 years)
  • Friday 20 December, 10.30am-noon (5 to 8 years)
  • Friday 20 December, 1.30-3pm (8 to 12 years)
  • Bookings and pre-payment of $15 per child essential.

Surf cult movie screenings and activities

Refer to galleries website for session times and booking details.

Kids’ Club

Saturday 7 December, 10am-noon

Enjoy two hours of free children’s art activities, based on the Sons of Beaches 72 exhibition.

No bookings required.

While visiting the Gallery make sure you head next door to the Caloundra Library to view the heritage surf exhibition which includes memorabilia on local well known surfing couple Ma (Majorie) and Pa (Charles Ben) Bendall, regarded as surfing legends who settled in Caloundra in the 1950s.

Visit council’s gallery website or call the gallery on 5420 8299 for further information and bookings. Caloundra Regional Gallery is located at 22 Omrah Avenue Caloundra and is open from 10am to 3pm Wednesday to Sunday.
