Beerwah to Costco in Northlakes – Is it worth it?

September 22, 2014 by Glasshouse Country 19 Comments

Today was our second “shopping trip” to Costco in North Lakes and like any good local should: “I ask myself is it worth the journey?“.

Depending on which exit one takes on the Bruce Highway the journey from Beerwah to Costco North Lakes is approximately 90km return, but when you get there the fuel is heavily discounted. (or so they say).

Costco Northlakes September 2014

Travel to Costco: Is it worth it and are there saving to be made by shopping there?  – (I hope so).

Todays unleaded fuel cost $1.39 / Litre at Costco. I know that because I filled up my tank. Later in the day when I phoned Woolworths to ask the price of fuel I was informed that they, (Woolworths) were not allowed to give out the price of fuel over the phone … so I drove in to check out the price myself and learned that the cost for Unleaded Fuel at Woolworths in Beerwah is $1.42 on the same day,  that’s a savings for 3 miserable cents. … mmm not a very significant difference between Woolworths and Costco and certainly not worth the 90km journey today.

Did we save on other products? – Well todays attraction certainly wasn’t the discounted unleaded fuel, but I think we saved on a range of other products, like Milo, Toilet Paper, Washing Powder, Butter, “live culture”, drinks.

** please note **  The author of this post is not very price savvy, but as the keeper of a family of 6 I’m always keen to make my dollar work for me, and yes I still think it’s worth it and I’m planning a third trip.

Perhaps you (the reader) can help me out and and answer the question below.

Is there saving to be gained by traveling to Costco?

It’s only Woolworths that suffers, most of us still shop at our local fruit and veg barns, IGA , Aldi and local butchers. Oh and the corner store for bread and milk.
Its not over rated, it’s called saving money and still eating great food that isn’t home brand.

When I get a pay rise I’ll stop think about saving money, but with penalty rates looking to be scrapped i can’t see that happening anytime soon

Was the the price of E10 or Unleaded? Costco doesn’t sell E10 and I have seen many try and compare those wrongly.

Hi Marlo, prices shown are for unleaded, My first journey to Costco I had forgotten that they offered fuel and I filled up else where, this time (my second trip to Costco) I spent most of my time figuring out the “Fuel Pay” machine. – I only thought to write the article after returning home this evening. On my next visit (third visit) I intend to take photographs. – Roland

I am also a family of 6 and it has been great for us, not only for the food, but the amazing return policy they have (ask about it next time your in).

To start with, my partner drives to Brisbane and back 4-5 times a week and his car can only use 98 premium. Filling his tank has dropped from over $100 to average $70 as he also gets better fuel economy.
I spend an average of $500 per month at Costco, but that includes luxury items that we normally don’t buy like shoes, clothes, electrical appliance, and then I stock up on fruit and veg locally, as well as meat, milk and bread on a daily basis.
We have used the optical centre twice already and have saved over $100 for each pair of glasses and the purchase of our dog food alone has given us the membership back.

We live in Landsborough, and yes, the 35 minute drive is worth it alone for the HUGE $15 pizza’s 🙂 I could go on all day.

Absolutely yes! Do as much of my shopping as possible there at Costco then the remainder at Aldi and IGA in Beerwah. Thankfully I now never have to shop at Woolies again!
